I began using a Legal Accounts Docketing System in 1990. The author of the software designed a very fundamental program for my personal and exclusive use. Although many desired features were missing or lackluster with the system it was “okay” for the time being. The author was not interested in improving the product which disappointed me so I looked around for a few years for better software to no avail.
In 2004, I was introduced to SoftDocket I for my legal accounts. Although my understanding of computers and software products is limited the learning curve was, for me, in using SoftDocket was very sharp. From day one I was pumping out my legal accounts with glee.
I am very particular in providing my client’s detailed accounts for legal services rendered. SoftDocket not only allowed me to be thorough but also efficient. I could produce an account at the press of a button as I kept on top of daily entries.
In 2005 along came SoftDocket II and the task of completing legal accounts became even easier and more efficient. I have no doubt that my billings increased by approximately 30% from the outset of using a the Docketing System. This is attributed to the ease of inputting details into each account resulting in much greater accuracy.
I’ve received only compliments from clients as to the details and accuracy in my accounts. My clients advised me the details assisted them greatly in keeping informed and abreast of their court cases.
Since using SoftDocket I and II, I have not received one complaint from Legal Aid Ontario. More importantly, LAO has not questioned or rejected any of my SoftDocket generated accounts.
Some clients consult be for advice without the thought of retaining me. They simply want to know their “legal rights” while merely contemplating a marital separation. Clients are surprised and pleased when I complete and hand them their account at the conclusion of our meeting. With few exceptions they pay their account then and there.
SoftDocket I and II has not only assisted me in increasing my billings, it has, in my view, enhanced my professional image with clients when a more detailed account is presented to them.
For anyone considering the purchase of SoftDocket:
I have been a user of PCLaw for many years and I have found that it has never been able to do my client accounts the way I want. I have had to resort to using MS Word, to create a clean and concise document to provide to my clients. The code system took a great deal of time to setup. It was about three weeks before I felt comfortable using the program.
I received an email from BoomerX and decided to download a copy of the software. My secretary had it installed over the network in about half an hour. After an hour she had the fees entered and the firm information setup.
Many defaults come pre-installed. The profiles allowed her to set up separate defaults for my associates and myself. I am estimating that it took less than a day for all of us to become confident in using the program.
We have been using the software for approximately six months and we have found that we are saving between 8 and 10 hours each, each month.
I am glad to see that someone in Canada has finally come up with something decent. We all look forward to seeing future versions of this software.
